Summary
A. Executive Summary
The project activities aim at providing comprehensive, standard and quality
protection, care and support services for vulnerable children and their
households. Thus various activities
were implemented in line with the project goal: to mitigate the impact
of HIV/AIDS on children and families in the focus states with specific focus of
improving the well-being and welfare of OVCs through accelerated and
sustainable multi-sectoral approach.
Caregivers’ forum was held with the aim of empowering them with parenting
skills, vocational skills and income generating activities, etc. to facilitate
in their caring for the OVC/Household. Data validation was also conducted to
ensure authenticity of data. All these activities took place in wards 9, 10,
and 11 of the project coverage area.

B. Introduction
ARFH/LOPIN1 Project is a
5year OVC intervention Project that seeks to address the high OVC burden and
HIV prevalence in 5 L.G.A.s in Akwa Ibom and 3 L.G.A.s in Rivers State, Nigeria.
Brokline Foundation, an
NGO in Ikot Ekpene L.G.A. with the goal of reducing the impact of poverty and
the burden of disease in the society is implementing the ARFH/LOPIN1 project in
three (3) wards which are ward 9, 10 & 11 in Ikot Ekpene L.G.A, Akwa Ibom State.

IR1: Improved systems and
structures at community, LGA and States providing responsive quality care,
protection and support services for vulnerable children and their households
The
following activities were carried out to achieve above named intermediate
result of the project;
- Home
visit
Households
enrolled in the Lopin 1 project were visited this month to ensure OVC/HH were
served with comprehensive care and support in order to improve their well
being. The home visit will also help in developing a case management plan for
the OVC/HH. During the home visit, OVC/HH were served with health &
nutrition education and psychosocial.
- School
visit
OVC
were visited during school to ascertain if they are in school, to assess their
school performance, emotional state and social behavior while in school. This
assessment will help in informing what program design that will be developed to
manage educational, emotional and social behavior challenges.

Club Forum
Kids
club forum was inaugurated on the 28th
November, 2015 in ward 9 and 10. The objective of the forum is to provide the VC
with life building skills in order to boost their self esteem, the strategy
applied would be through an interactive recreational medium. In attendance was
the village head and a total of 278 (145m, 133f) Children comprising of Ward 9, 117(58m, 59f) and Ward 10
161(87m, 74f) VC.
- Care
givers forum
BLF held caregivers’ forum in November, 2015 in wards 9, 10 and
11. This activity was aimed at sensitizing caregivers on good parenting,
nutrition and empowering them with Income generating activities (IGAs),
vocational skills etc to enable them care for the OVC in their households. The
caregivers were informed about the LOPIN 1 project which is funded by USAID and
implemented by Brokline Foundation through ARFH. Other matters discussed during
the meeting were roles of caregivers and roles of Community Volunteers. The
caregivers were however concerned about what they intend to benefit from the
project and the level of commitment and sincerity of the project team. However
the issues raised by the caregivers were adequately addressed by BLF team. At
the end of the exercise, the care givers promised to mobilize their children
and participate in LOPIN 1 activities whenever they are needed. 62 (6m, 56f)
caregivers were in attendance.

The
following activities were carried out to achieve above named intermediate
result of the project;
CBO/CV REVIEW
MEETING
A
review meeting was held with the CVs in order to access their performance for
the previous month on the LOPIN project based on service delivery, this review
will help inform if the service deliverables is being achieved, ascertain gaps
and address challenges encountered during the course of executing their
community work. Their capacity was also built through mentorship to further
fortify their skill and ability to drive the project. They were mentored on:

CAPACITY BUILDING
BLF
technical capacity in service provision for VC/HH was improved through an
integrated training on age appropriate, evidence based programming and gender
sensitive service provision for vulnerable children and Households which held
on the 16th to 20th November, 2015. The training was
conducted by ARFH
IR3: Local indigenous civil society partners
engage more effectively with local government and private partners.
The
following activities were carried out to achieve above named intermediate
result of the project;
- Advocacy
to PHC, General Hospital Ikot Ekpene
BLF carried out
advocacy visit with the aim of identifying health facilities in order to
establish a referral mechanism, create an enabling environment for referred VC
to access services, solicit for partnership and create a buy-in into the
project.
BLF paid an
advocacy visit to the PHC Operational Base, Library Avenue Ikot Ekpene wher we
met with the In-charge Mrs. Nkoyo Etiemana, she was briefed about the LOPIN 1
project and that BLF is implementing the LOPIN project in Ikot Ekpene, where VC
are enrolled and provided with services.
She welcomed us
and approved that VC could be referred to the PHC in order to access services.
BLF could not
meet with the Medical Superintendent during her advocacy visit to the General
Hospital because he was out, advocacy
letter was dropped with the administrative secretary who said he will get back
to us, BLF will follow up to bring to a logical conclusion of the objective of
the advocacy visit.
Referral
mechanism has been established with PHC and enabling environment created for
referred VC to access services.
- Advocacy to Police Station
BLF carried out advocacy visit to the Police Station on the 26h
November, with aim of establishing a
protection mechanism for the protection of the child right, to create an
enabling environment where issues of child abuse, rape, child labour,
trafficking etc can be reported by affected persons and addressed by the law
enforcement agent.
Lesson Learnt

It is of great essence to
validate data in order to guard against errors
Challenges
·
Activities were
conducted in a short notice, this hindered proper mobilization on the part of
the Community Volunteers.
Recommendation
·
Activities should be
well planned so that it can be executed on time.
